James Rado, the actor, playwright and composer finest identified for co-writing the seminal 1967 musical Hair, died Tuesday (June 21). He was 90.

The information was introduced by Rado’s longtime buddy, publicist Merle Frimark (by way of The New York Times), who mentioned the Broadway legend died of cardiac arrest in Manhattan surrounded by his household.

James Alexander Radomski was born on January 23, 1932 in Los Angeles. Raised between Rochester, New York and Washington, DC, he went on to check language and theater on the University of Maryland. In school he wrote his first musicals, impressed by artists similar to Rodgers & Hammerstein, Rodgers & Hart and Cole Porter, in addition to common music from the Thirties onwards. After serving two years within the US Navy after graduating, Rado moved to New York City in 1956 to pursue performing.

According to Frimark, writing a Broadway musical had been Rado’s dream since he was younger. He achieved that aim with “Marathon ’33,” which debuted on Broadway in 1963. The following 12 months, he met actor and songwriter Gerome Ragni, with whom he rapidly turned pals and commenced writing “Hair.”

Ragni gave producer Joseph Papp the Hair script throughout an opportunity encounter on a prepare. Papp was bought and selected the musical to open his newly fashioned public theatre. Hair made its worldwide debut on October 17, 1967, performed by Gerald Freedman, and ran on the Public Theater for eight weeks.

Rado was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2009. He remained energetic till his loss of life, engaged on a handful of different exhibits and overseeing worldwide productions of Hair.
